가끔 연속으로 7화음이 나타나는 경우가 있는데, 특히 5도권 진행(circle of fifths)에서 자주 볼 수 있음. 4성부로 쓰여진, 근음 자리에 놓인 7화음들의 5도권 진행에선, 한 화음에서는 5음을 생략해 불완전하게 두고, 다음 화음에서는 완전하게 채우는 방식을 교대로 쓰는 것이 좋음.

원칙 27.2.2 — 근음 위치 7화음은 완전형과 불완전형을 번갈아 배치함.

전위 7화음이 섞인 5도권 진행에서는 각 화음의 7음을 한 음 내리고 나머지 성부를 가장 가까운 음으로 이음. 두 성부는 공통음을 유지하고 나머지 두 성부는 한 음씩 내려가는 패턴이 생김.
